Clarke Elementary students took part in a couple of great events Wednesday, celebrating the progress the school and its students have made toward better health.

The Clarke Elementary Parent-Teacher Community Organization held its 3rd Annual “Indian Walk” on Wednesday. Students walked through a light drizzle from the elementary school through town to the square, where they joined Clarke High School cheerleaders, school administrators and Shawn Johnson, owner of JET Fitness in Osceola for a well-deserved celebration and award ceremony.

Clarke Elementary was one of just four Iowa schools to win an award in the USDA’s HealthierUS School Challenge: Smarter Lunchroom, and was the only school in Iowa to win Silver certification. This prestigious distinction was awarded for the school’s outstanding work on expanding nutrition and physical activity excellence. By providing healthier choices through the school lunch program and a growing health initiative, Clarke Elementary has shown its continued commitment to building healthy schools and healthy students.

We are exceptionally proud of the planning and hard work of our elementary staff and administrators,” said Steve Seid, Superintendent of Clarke Schools. “This kind of recognition enforces for the students and the community that healthy choices do make a difference.”

This marks the second time Clarke Schools was awarded the Silver HealthierUS School Challenge award. The celebration was a lot of fun for everyone involved and included dancing, fitness demonstrations from JET Fitness and performances from the Clarke Cheerleaders and the Panther mascot.
