Amidst ACT tests, summer volleyball, and work at The Junction Creamery, Clarke senior Sophia Hicks is gathering some practical experience this summer as the latest intern for the City of Osceola.

Sophia Hicks Osceola Iowa City Hall InternSophia and her family moved to Osceola when she was in the third grade. Over the years, she’s worked hard to build a strong 4.2 GPA while also participating in extra-curricular activities like volleyball. But a career in law and politics hasn’t been far from her mind since she discovered her passion for activism.

“A freshman speech assignment really opened my eyes to ways I can make a difference for underrepresented and marginalized people,” said Hicks. “When the opportunity came up to see how the different parts of our local government work together for the community, I jumped at the chance.”

Hicks is excited to get involved with the ins and outs of city government before starting a demanding schedule of senior classes. Through Clarke’s partnership with Central Campus, she’ll be taking AP courses in History, Chemistry, Accelerated Literature & Composition, and Accelerated Calculus with plans to start a pre-law program at one of her top schools: Columbia University, New York University, or the University of Chicago. From there, she wants to become a civil rights attorney or even a congresswoman like one of her idols, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“It’s great to give students interested in local government and public service a chance to experience it, first hand,” said Wheeler.  “We’ve enjoyed having Sophia in City Hall.”

Hicks is also hoping to work with the State Legislature as an intern next year, already using her voice to get involved. Using her growing social media presence, she informs people about proposed bills, advocates for mental health issues, and uses her passion for activism to speak for people who may not have a strong voice.

“Sophia is a great asset to have serving our community,” said Osceola’s Mayor, Thomas Kedley. “I had the honor of having Sophia as a student and she is a very driven and passionate individual. She’s a voice for justice and equality for all.  I’m very excited to see what she accomplishes in her future!”

With all of her accomplishments, we’re watching Sophia closely to see what dynamic achievements she makes after leaving Clarke. So, next time you’re in City Hall or if you see Sophia around town, give her a big “Congratulations” on her role with the City and her outstanding future.
