Manufacturing remains one of the strongest economic drivers in Clarke County and across south-central Iowa, creating ongoing demand for skilled workers who are ready to contribute on day one. This fall, Southwestern Community College is helping meet that need by offering Introduction to Fabrication at its Osceola Center Welding Lab.

Beginning August 25, the three-credit course gives students practical, hands-on experience with the foundational skills used every day in modern manufacturing environments. Participants will learn proper tool usage, layout methods, material estimating, and other fabrication techniques that serve as the building blocks for careers in manufacturing, welding, and the skilled trades.

Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. over a 16-week semester at the SWCC Osceola Center.

The course is designed for a wide range of participants, including high school graduates exploring career options, adults interested in changing careers, current manufacturing employees seeking additional skills, and employers looking to invest in workforce development.

“Developing a skilled workforce begins by giving people access to quality training close to home,” said Andrew Clark, Executive Director of the Clarke County Development Corporation. “Whether someone is beginning a new career, advancing their current position, or an employer is investing in employee development, these local programs help strengthen both our workforce and our future manufacturing economy.”

While instruction takes place at the Osceola Center, courses like Introduction to Fabrication complement the growing network of manufacturing and technical education opportunities available in Clarke County. Along with training offered through the ORBIT Center, these programs are creating a stronger talent pipeline that supports local manufacturers while expanding career opportunities for area residents.

Manufacturing continues to be one of Clarke County’s largest employment sectors, and access to local education and training remains an important component of the community’s long-term workforce strategy. By reducing barriers to technical education and providing instruction close to home, Southwestern Community College is helping prepare the skilled workforce local employers need today and into the future.

Individuals interested in enrolling in Introduction to Fabrication are encouraged to register soon, as classes begin August 25.
