Starting in July, Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Business & Community Development will offer an eight-week Electrical Theory & Technology program designed to help participants build practical electrical skills that are increasingly in demand across manufacturing, industrial, commercial, and institutional workplaces.

Running from July 8 through August 26, the hybrid training program combines online learning, classroom instruction, and hands-on lab experiences to provide participants with real-world skills they can immediately apply on the job.

The course is ideal for maintenance personnel, entry-level technicians, individuals interested in exploring electrical careers, and employees looking to increase their value within their current organization.

As workforce shortages continue to impact employers throughout south-central Iowa, programs like this provide a practical pathway for workers to upskill while sustaining a productive career.

Participants will receive instruction in electrical flow and Ohm’s Law, electrical drawings and schematics, conductor sizing, electrical code fundamentals, conduit bending, circuit basics, motor theory, and hands-on wiring techniques.

For local employers, the training offers an opportunity to invest in existing employees and develop a stronger internal talent pipeline. Rather than recruiting specialized talent from outside the region, businesses can help current team members gain foundational electrical knowledge and technical competencies that support long-term growth and productivity.

“This is exactly the type of workforce development opportunity that helps both employees and employers succeed,” said Wayne Pantini, Vice President of Economic Development at SWCC. “Workers gain marketable skills and career advancement opportunities, while companies strengthen their workforce through continuing education and upskilling.”

The program consists of 32 total training hours, including online coursework, classroom instruction, and laboratory experience. Sessions will be held Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at CCDC’s ORBIT Center in Osceola, Iowa.

Employers may also be eligible for reimbursement through Iowa’s Jobs Training (260F) Program, which can offset 70 to 100 percent of training costs for qualifying businesses.

The registration fee is $750, and enrollment closes July 6.

Individuals interested in advancing their careers and employers interested in workforce training opportunities are encouraged to register soon, as space may be limited.
